When it comes to safety, wearing a helmet is key. Motorcycle half helmets are just one of four types of helmets that are available. Though they don’t offer as much protection as a full helmet, they do offer more than wearing no helmet allows. The first step in determining which helmet is best for your needs is to begin by checking with your local laws. Some states have strict helmet laws, while others make wearing motorcycle helmets a voluntary effort. If you want minimal protection, and like the idea of having clear vision without your peripheral vision being hindered, then you might want to consider motorcycle half helmets.

The Department of Transportation, the Snell Memorial Foundation, and the American National Standards Institute govern the safety of motorcycle helmets. Each of these organizations will certify whether or not a helmet has met their safety requirements. However, the Snell Memorial Foundation will not certify motorcycle half helmets, but the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, for short as well as the Department of Transportation, or DOT, will. When choosing motorcycle half helmets, look for these certifications permanently affixed to the inside of the helmet. There have been cases of unscrupulous individuals trying to sell novelty helmets as those that have passed safety inspections by placing stickers on them. Choose motorcycle half helmets with the permanent DOT label to ensure that your helmet has passed inspection.
